Chemical Heritage Foundation 315 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, PA Thursday, May 19, 2016 6:00pm Registration and Reception with Hors d'oeuvres, Beer, Wine and Soft Drinks 7:00pm Dinner, Awards Ceremony and Keynote Speaker Special Guest & Speaker: MARIA GIBBS, S.M.ASCE presenting on Bridges to Prosperity Summary: Bridges to Prosperity is a non-profit organization that envisions a world where poverty caused by rural isolation no longer exists. This organization's programs provide access to healthcare, education and markets by teaching communities how to build footbridges over impassable rivers, in partnership with organizations and professionals. Maria Gibbs has been involved on the engineering side, in the field, and performing research related to the complex interaction between wind and flexible bridges in order to make these bridges a reality. Maria is passionate about the intersection of engineering research, design thinking and economic justice and hopes to leverage innovative research to disrupt the barriers to agency that are the root of inter-generational poverty in the developing world. Maria will share her work on predicting the behavior of footbridges in wind and designing mitigation strategies to create wind-resilient footbridges that can be built over long spans, providing access to schools, health clinics and jobs for isolated communities. About Our Speaker: Maria Gibbs, S.M.ASCE Maria Gibbs is a fourth year Ph.D. student in civil engineering at the University of Notre Dame. Her research focuses on the wind-resistance of long span footbridges in the developing world. Maria has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Duke University where she was a National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges Scholar. Duke recently recognized Maria with the Duke Young Alumni Service and Leadership Award for her work with the non-profit Bridges to Prosperity where she helped create access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people from isolated communities in the developing world. Maria was chosen as a 2015 New Face of Engineering by DiscoverE and selected as one of the top ten Civil Engineers under 30 by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Maria is a recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and is a University of Notre Dame Arthur J. Schmitt Leadership Fellow.
