Two Presentations from DVASE 2017 Outstanding Project Award Winners

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Philadelphia Temple, Philadelphia, PA

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Philadelphia Temple is part of a 300,000-square-foot complex. The Temple is a four-story building of approximately 45,000 SF in area and features one of the most ornately detailed natural stone facades built in Philadelphia in nearly 100 years. Designed to the Church's strict seismic performance criteria, the building was completed in 2016 and serves over 40,000 members from the Philadelphia region. Keast & Hood served as the prime structural engineering consultant to Perkins + Will with FFKR Architects.

Shoring Design for Existing High Rise Structure

Presented by: Mark Yerges, PE, Project Engineer, CVM

The shoring for this existing high rise structure included actively jacking two failed concrete transfer beams to relieve existing dead load prior to externally post tensioning the two beams. Both beams support columns going up through 31 floors of residential construction and exist near the middle of the building, approximately 60 feet above grade in an open atrium, making access a challenge.

About Our Speakers:
Matt Cornman is a Project Manager at Keast & Hood Structural Engineers. He served as the Structural Engineer for the new Philadelphia, PA Temple. Matt Graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Structural Concentration. He is a DVASE member.

Patrick Fair is an Associate at Keast & Hood Structural Engineers and served as the Project Manager for the Philadelphia, PA Temple and complex. Patrick has over 25 years of structural engineering experience. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering, Structural Emphasis in 1988. He is also a certified Construction Documents Technologist since 2005 and a member of DVASE.

Mark Yerges is a Project Engineer at CVM and served on the structural team for this project. Mark graduated from the Pennsylvania State University at Harrisburg in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Structural Design. He is a member of PTI's DC-20 Building Design Committee and a DVASE member.
