The design process for innovative wood structures is a collaborative endeavor, requiring the active participation of architects, engineers, fabricators, erectors, inspection and testing agencies, and local building authorities early in the design process. This applies to many wood structure types, including the evolving world of mass wood and tall wood buildings. Unlike many other building materials, the rapid evolution of engineered wood materials, virtual design tools, CNC fabrication process, and new connection technologies have opened a world of possibilities, as well as a world of new risks to be managed. These issues will be discussed with design examples, including the grand entry sculpture at the Viceroy Palm Jumeirah Dubai hotel, the roof structure of the Aspen Art Museum and Platte Fifteen. The first is a 46-foot-tall structure of slender curving wood that was erected, like a ship-in-a-bottle, within the tight boundaries of an existing structural glass cube. The second is a long-span three-dimensional wood spaceframe with intersecting curved wood members with no visible connectors. The third is an economical mass timber office in Denver, Colorado. In all cases, we believe that highly innovative structures such as these require early alignment of design approach, fabricator capabilities, and erection strategy.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:
Greg Kingsley graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1984 with a BS and MS in Architectural and Civil Engineering respectively. After working in Boulder for a few years doing masonry structure research, he went on to get a PhD in Structural Engineering at UC San Diego, where he conducted a pseudo-dynamic test on a full-scale 5-story reinforced masonry building. He continued his studies in earthquake engineering at the University of Pavia, Italy where he worked on another full-scale building test, this time in unreinforced masonry.
In 1995 he returned to Colorado and became a founding partner of KL&A, Engineers and Builders, a firm that now includes 95 structural engineers and builders with four offices in Colorado and Wyoming. KL&A is known for its creative designs, and for vertically integrated services from design through construction, and has consistently been voted one of the top ten structural engineering firms to work for in the U.S. since 2006. Greg has long enjoyed collaborating on challenging architectural projects with innovative structural systems in a variety of materials, but his current passion is for the rapidly growing field of mass timber construction. Greg considers mass timber to be our best hope for marrying carbon sequestration with forest health and environmental responsibility in the built environment.
