Empire State Building: 102nd floor Observation Deck Reclad (Access and Protection at 1,250 ft.)
Description:
In 2016, the Empire State Reality Trust (ESRT) embarked on a major refresh of the famous 102nd floor observation deck. The project called for the demolition of the existing envelope and installation of floor-to-ceiling glass panels to provide 360-degree views of the Manhattan skyline. The demolition and new construction scope itself was not extreme; what set it apart was its exterior location 1,250 ft above the streets of Manhattan. While the means & methods of a design (access, protection, sequencing, etc.) are often left solely to the contractor, the extremes of this project required a holistic approach from the entire project team.
What was accomplished is a testament to the power of collaboration and communication between the design and construction teams. Early identification of multiple high risk “pain points” allowed the team to successfully navigate a demanding design, regulatory and construction path. While this project was unusual in that the means and methods were the main design and schedule drivers, it is an example of how a collaborative design-assist mentality is essential for the success of complex projects.

Mr. Mark has worked on a wide range of projects, including custom temporary access solutions, elaborate shoring designs, sequenced demolition, and site safety programs.
