Foundation Design and Construction for our Structural Brethren
Deep Foundation Design Basic Cookbook
Presented By:  Marc J. Gallagher, PE, LEED AP and Michael Fritzges, PE Langan Engineering & Environmental Services
Foundations are often the largest unknown during the initial design of a project. With more and more projects being constructed on land previously thought of as "marginal" the foundation challenge becomes even greater.  These unknowns can be grossly over or under estimated in a proforma, giving a skewed financial outlook for a project.  This presentation will look at the basic elements of pile foundation design and construction, to provide a basic understanding of:

Different pile types
Design of piles
Rules of thumb for early estimating
Construction requirements/issues
Load testing

The overall objective is to arm a structural designer with some basic understanding of why type of piles may be appropriate for a job and some back of the envelope load capacity estimates – with this understanding early meetings with clients, even before a geotechnical consultant is on board, can be more productive.

About the Speakers:
Marc Gallagher has 19 years of diversified experience that includes geotechnical investigations and site evaluations, foundation design, bulkhead design, excavation support, construction oversight, Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments, sanitary sewer design, stormwater management, and roadway reconstruction.   He has been involved with the geotechnical evaluation of projects ranging from small residential buildings to large retail power-centers to skyscrapers.  Marc has also overseen geotechnical construction including micro-pile installation, pile driving, caisson drawing, tie-back installation, pile load testing, grouting, lime stabilization, retaining wall construction, and controlled fill placement.  He has provided technical and leadership roles on international projects including residential and commercial projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), stadiums in Iraq and the UAE, and motorways in Greece.
