Masonry Movement Joints

Presented By:  Dan Siteman, EIT, Director of Industry Development
& Technical Services, International Masonry Institute

Masonry materials are known for their durable, robust character and presence in iconic structures throughout our world. As newer materials were introduced to the build environment, we have reduced our reliance on the sheer mass of masonry walls and structures. Resultantly, our envelopes and wall systems have become thinner and more complex. A better understanding of materials is required to maintain a high level of expected performance. Movement control is among the most important aspects toward maximizing both functionality and aesthetics of our buildings. Masonry Movement Joints will cover basic reasoning behind the need for movement control in masonry systems. Different types of movement joints will be discussed as well as key areas to consider. We will also take look at industry standards such as TMS 402/602 and guidelines from BIA and NCMA.

Learning Objectives:
LEARN                definitions of various masonry movement joints
DISCOVER          movement characteristics of masonry materials and systems
UNDERSTAND   purpose and location of masonry movement joints
ACQUIRE            knowledge and insights into designing & installing MJ's
