Innovative Underpinning Systems

Presented By: Bashar S. Qubain, Ph.D., P.E.

Urban projects present a unique set of challenges as well as opportunities for creativity and innovation in underpinning design by taking a comprehensive approach to addressing the issues involved.  In this seminar, the points or factors that make an underpinning system innovative will be discussed and contrasted to traditional underpinning.  Innovation in underpinning cannot be rigidly categorized but may be broadly grouped into the following general categories:  (1) combining the function of excavation support with that of permanently retaining lateral earth pressures; (2) utilizing easy to install helical piles, micro piles or jet grouting in lieu of the labor-intensive approach pit underpinning; and (3) increasing the capacity of existing foundations through ground improvement techniques or soil-structure
interaction analyses.

About our Speaker:

Bashir S. Qubain, Ph.D., P.E., is president and founder of GeoStructures, Inc., a geotechnical engineering consulting firm in King of Prussia, PA.  His areas of expertise include soil mechanics and foundations and geotechnical applications of the finite element method (FEM).  He has over 20 years of professional experience in foundation analysis and design, soil-structure interaction, slope stability analysis, sinkhole evaluation and remediation, soil stabilization, and pavement and geosynthetic reinforcement design.  He has served as the chief geotechnical engineer on many transportation projects for the Pennsylvania Turnpike, PennDOT, NJDOT, DelDOT and SEPTA as well as numerous commercial, institutional and industrial projects.
