About Our First Speaker:
Michelle Kam-Biron, P.E., S.E., S.E.C.B., Director of Education
Michelle Kam-Biron joined the American Wood Council (AWC) staff in 2012. She currently serves as Director of Education. Before joining AWC, she was Senior Technical Director – National Lead Mid-rise/Multi-family Construction for WoodWorks. She has over 20 years of experience managing and designing a wide range of projects in various structural materials as well as Division of State Architect contract plan review. Michelle has authored and contributed to several publications on the use of structural wood products as well as presented throughout the nation on the topic. She graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a BS in Architectural Engineering. She is the current Treasurer and past Director of the Structural Engineers Association of Southern California and a volunteer on the Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo Architectural Engineering Advisory Board.

AWC's 2008 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic ASD/LRFD – Part 1: Overview and Changes from Previous Editions (1.0 hr.)
Per the International Building Code (IBC), structures using wood shear walls and diaphragms to resist wind, seismic and other lateral loads shall be designed and constructed in accordance with AWC's Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS). This course will discuss the 2008 SDPWS which is a dual format document with both allowable stress design (ASD) and load and resistance factor design (LRFD). In this course, participants will learn about format of the SDPWS and how to apply ASD and LRFD design provisions to shear walls and diaphragms as well as about changes from previous editions.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
1. Be able to understand load path basics and how it applies to wood structural design.
2. Be familiar with the significant changes between the 2005 and 2008 SDPWS.
3. Be able to identify the lateral resisting systems and understand where to obtain
design provisions for these systems.
4. Be able to analyze format and content within the 2008 SDPWS.

Shear Wall Design Examples (1.0 hr.)
There are several design tools and standards to assist engineers, architects, and building officials with the design of shear walls. Prescriptive approaches such as those outlined in International Code Council's (ICC) International Residential Code (IRC) and AWC's Wood Frame Construction Manual (WFCM) for One- and Two-Family Dwellings tend to provide conservative results. Engineered approaches such as those outlined in AWC's Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) typically result in more efficient designs. This course will outline several resources available for shear wall design and compare design results.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
1. Identify and understand the basic shear wall system to resist wind and seismic
loads.
2. Understand the difference between segmented and perforated shear wall design.
3. Understand hold down design.
4. Be able to identify and analyze shear walls per the IRC, WFCM, and SDPWS and
understand the differences between them.

About Our Second Speaker:
Mary Uher, is an Engineered Wood Specialist for APA – The Engineered Wood Association, serving the Mid-Atlantic region. Mary is a graduate of University of Nebraska with a MS in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structures. Her duties include consulting with designers and end users on the efficient specification, selection and use of engineered wood products. Prior to joining APA, Mary worked as a consulting engineer with projects including a wide variety of commercial structures as well as bridges.

Engineered Wood Beams: (1.0 hr.)
This course is an introduction to the engineered wood beams. Products covered glued-laminated timber (glulam), structural composite lumber, and wood I-joists. Unique characteristics for each product are highlighted and examples of the use of these products in a wide range of building applications are presented. Glulams are discussed in detail, including connections, new technologies, and fire rating.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:

1. Compare an array of generic and proprietary engineered wood beams and select the
best product for a given application.
2. Understand common mis-applications for engineered wood beams that affect their
performance with regard to strength
3. Examine both proper and improper connection options for transferring loads within
Engineered Wood Beam systems.
4. Determine proper comparison and specification of Engineered Wood Beam products
in unique structural applications based on completed structural examples

Connections: (1.0 hr.)
This seminar presents current wood connection design philosophy, behavior, serviceability issues, and connection design techniques for small and large members, panel products, and wood assemblies, using dowel-type and specialized components. Mary will also discuss lateral loads, how they translate to design loads, and the critical connections along the lateral load-path for wood-frame structures.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:

1. Participants will be able to identify common pitfalls in the design of wood structural
systems with regard to connection design and thereby reduce liability, enhance
life-safety, and insure greater client satisfaction.
2. Participants will learn of the most common causes for structural failure due to
load-path continuity in wood buildings based on APA field observations.
3. Participants will be provided with design resources (websites, software, research
and design publications) addressing the challenges facing today's wood structural
designer.
4. New connection technologies will be introduced along with recently-developed design
methods that enhance load-path continuity.
