High Performance Slabs-on-Ground: Start with the Basics!

Presented By: Barry E. Foreman, P.E., P.Eng.
Director, Providence Engineering Corporation

Building owners want quality floor slabs that last, that shine, that are crack free, that don't curl. They have high expectations. Every owner wants a high performing slab. Floor slabs need to meet the expectations requested by the owner. The floor slab designer is an integral part of the design and construction team. With this audience of engineers at the meeting, we will focus on the designer's contribution to meeting the owner's expectations for a high performance slab.

In order to achieve a high performance slab, designers need to start by following the basics of floor slab design and specifying. Many issues with floors not meeting the owner's expectations start with the design. If the design is poor or non-existent, then the resulting floor slab is on a path of potential "poor performance" and not the expected "high performance" quality desired by the owner. First, we will assume that most designers know how to properly determine the thickness to the slab. Next, the importance of proper subgrade design is so critical in supporting the floor. Poor support will lead to a bad slab. Geotechnical engineers don't always recommend the correct materials under the floor. The concrete mix design is very critical and most designers ignore specifying it correctly. They assume, many times incorrectly, that the construction component of the building team knows what to do. There will be discussion on concrete ingredients. There are many types of reinforcing for floor slabs and if used, they must be done correctly. The advantages of using reinforcing and the different types will be discussed. Using no reinforcing will also be reviewed. Proper jointing is related to the reinforcing and the concrete mix. Improper joint patterns can lead to floor cracks. The floor surface is the portion of the slab that everybody can see. Again, designers have the responsibility to design the slab with a surface that meets the expectations of the building owner. Understanding flatness/levelness of the surface, curing, sealers, and hardeners is important so that the designer can understand the difference between achieving a high performance slab versus getting an "ordinary" floor slab.

There will be discussion on some slab designs that have been around for many decades as well as some newer concepts that can provide "super high performance" floor slabs. Achieving a high performance slab does not necessarily require an expensive design, but rather, just following the basic techniques recommended by ACI will be a key in providing a design that will meet the high expectations of a building owner.

About Our Speaker: Barry Foreman brings 40 years of experience in the areas of manufacturing, processing, distribution and storage facilities. His well-rounded education and experience provides the expertise for complete design integration of the architectural work with the structural system.

Barry is well qualified in the design and construction of slabs-on-grade, slabs on deck, and elevated structural slabs especially for the high loadings and wear imposed by racking systems and material handling equipment in manufacturing and distribution centers. Barry is chair of ACI Committee 360, Design of Slabs on Grade and chair of the subcommittee on the Chapter on Floor Slab Design in Refrigerated Buildings. He is also a voting member of ACI Committee 302, Construction of Concrete Floors and a voting member of ACI 223, Shrinkage-Compensating Concrete. He also provides expert witness consulting relative to concrete and structural investigation and litigations. Barry is a nationwide seminar presenter on slab on ground design and construction.
